Markets feel like pretty much the only type of public event that you can access at the moment on the island. Still we can count ourselves lucky that we have the chance for a gathering of any sort, as many other parts of the world would certainly be looking on with a touch of envy.
The Lantau markets are then perhaps taking on an even greater role than normal, offering us not only the chance to purchase some artisan goodies and crafty creations, but also providing us with that social interaction we all need once in a while, to maintain our well-being and sanity.
With this in mind, the Lantau Network team hightailed it over to Discovery Bay, for a Sunday afternoon of barter and banter and to take in the well-established market scene being driven by Handmade Hong Kong.
The DB Sunday market forms one of Handmade Hong Kong’s city wide market offerings and while it would be fair to say the DB Market provides more of an opportunity for Hong Kong traders to bring their merchandise to the island, than to act as a platform for the homespun producers, it is still very much an artisan/craft affair.
In fact as their site promotes:
- Handmade – not mass produced
- Friendly to the environment or health
- Local in providence or design
- Supportive of a good cause
- Not easily available in shops
The market is hosted at the Discovery Bay Plaza, which makes it all super easy, for not only the local residents, but also for the incoming market goers.
The Plaza is the dropping-off point for the buses from Tung Chung and the ferries from Central and it’s also only a short-ish walk for local ferries from Mui Wo and Cheung Chau.
It is well worth the journey, given that you will have a great variety of goods to browse from the 100 plus stallholders, who keenly hawk their wares and services to you.
Having endured a year of uncertainty and cancellations, due to the pandemic, it was great to see the DB Sunday Market back in full swing, giving people the chance to have a change of pace and enjoy a sunny afternoon.
So if you don’t want to miss out on the next one, make a date in your dairy by DB Sunday Market Calendar.
