Southside Cornhole Tournament

With international sporting events currently pretty much on hold worldwide, our aspirations and competitive cravings have had to take on a much more local homespun feel to fill the void – enter the Southside Cornhole Tournament.

Who better indeed than Southside, as Lantau’s very own community minded Southern American food diner, to act as host and stadium for what would be a hotly contested event of ‘throwing a bag into a hole’.

To be fair though, there is a bit more to it than that, so read on.

Cornhole, also known as; Bags, Baggo, Bean Bag Toss, Dummy Boards, Doghouse, Dadhole, Sacks, Bean in the Hole and Ramps, turns out to have a bit of a history.

Although popularized in the USA, Cornhole’s origins are thought to trace back to Germany and to have derived from the much older games of ‘horseshoes’ and ‘Quoits.’

With that background in mind then, Cornhole arrived in the States with German immigrants in the early 1900’s, who settled in and around Cincinnati.

However, with the stakes and the rings/shoes being replaced by a corn filled bag and a slanting board with a hole, the game became more family friendly and began to grow in popularity.

From that point on the game grew across the length and breadth of the country and has been played at weddings, graduations, parties and backyard grill-outs ever since. It has even reached the heady heights of establishing its own American Cornhole League.

So, with the weight of history on their shoulders the 16 strong entry at the Southside comp, got to it and rattled through the afternoon with fine display of skills, determination and of course outright luck.

In the end there can of course only be one winner and this time the accolades and bragging rights would go to Cormac Mackle.

On the face of it Cornhole might appear to be a simple enough game, but as is so often the case it turns out it is a game requiring skill, strategy and a grasp of maths.

If though you are now suitably intrigued and would like to have a try at Cornhole yourself, then good news as there is always the opportunity for a game or two anytime you visit Southside Lantau for a top of the line burger and beer.
